Summer Jams 2014 (My Top 10)

Taken by my small brother edited by my big brother. Keeping it in the family.

Winter is around the corner and summer 2014 is about to fade away.  Im about to go back to the madness of being a University student in my second year, which is meant to be the toughest year, but im sure i'll get through it. Spending time with family and friends has been a blessing and although the weather was moody and all that, i did have some fantastic days out in the sun.

It goes without saying that sun and music just seem to go together like butter on bread (corny much). So here is my top 10 list of summer jams that i just couldn't stop dancing to. (or in the case of Stay with me by Sam Smith, lay down on the grass and look up to the sky and wonder why)

10. Problem- Arianne Grande x Iggy Azalea

9. Loyal- Chris Brown x Lil Wayne x Tyga (East Coast Version)

8. Fancy- Iggy Azalea x Charli XCX

7. Summer- Calvin Harris

6. Na na- Trey Songz

5. Partition- Beyonce

4. Stay with me- Sam Smith

3. Waves (Robin Schulz Radio Edit) - Mr. Probz

2. Good Kisser- Usher

1. Am I wrong- Niko x Vinz

What songs were you jamming to this Summer?

The "Lionel Richie" Phase: My go-to guy for Romantic songs.

Hello? Is it me you're looking for?..... but let me start by saying I love you.

If you were alive in the 90's or just a romantic, the lyrics above shouldn't be such a mystery. He was probably the most played musician during those times and before.

Grammy winner, golden globe winner, four decades of music-making and numerous mentorship roles on today's popular artists, Lionel Richie has excelled where most have feared to go. He didnt care that LOVE was such a cliche topic to sing about. He never found ways of camouflaging it. He did it raw and dirty and it paid off. To this day, he is the go-to-guy for a romantic songs. Having a chilled romantic dinner? Driving your date to or from a date? Looking for music to create a romantic atmosphere? With you loved one? Put on some Lionel Richie because you know he wont disappoint.

I went through my "Lionel Richie" phase when I was about 15 years roughly 5 years ago.  I had just fallen in love for the first time and all i could bring myself to listen to was Lionel's songs. My first love was sweet and his songs were the soundtrack to my life. I was completely obsessed with the notion of love (still I'm, but in a more mature way) and I remember the one person that understood me fully was him. Of course, that phase ended but his music stuck with me.

The famous Eight letters, Three words made him a legend for decades to come.

My top 10 favourite songs by him and what ideally you should have are (not in any particular order) :

 "Say you say me"

"Hello"

 "Stuck on You"

"All Night Long"

 "Easy"

"Endless Love" feat Shania Twain

"I call it love"

"Three times the lady"

"Just for you"

"Just go"

This ten songs did it for me. So what are you waiting for all you romantics at heart? Listen to a bit of Lionel Richie tonight, tomorrow and the next day just to warm your heart and brighten up your day.

Happy Listening.

ALBUM REVIEW: Ed Sheeran's "X" album.

Released a couple of months ago (3 months precisely), X is the second studio album by English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. His extraordinary guitar skills and soaring tenor voice has captured the hearts of many including mine. I remember obsessing over his first time album when it came out and without fail playing it over and over again. It was that good to me.

Why i love the "X" album?
I absolutely love this new album because like the previous one, it lays emphasis on the message of the songs rather than the underlying instrumentation. He tells a story in each song that you can relate to. He literally spells out situations in life that i have found myself in. As a musician, its important to write songs that your fans can relate to. I also love the simple instrumentation, with the guitar and his voice being the most important. And oh, he raps (in The Man and Take it back) and kind of sing-talks in some of the verses and songs which i absolutely love and think its trendy. Not forgetting that this album is more of a personal album as it doesn't have that many collaborations. He is the main man. He is the only man.

Song-writing skills, Yay or nay?
YAAAAY!! Honest, witty, clever-rhyming, true and image-provoking, his lyrics connect and make you feel as if you are having a conversation with him(a rather poetic conversation).

Is it better than the last one?
Oh yes. He has really grown as a musician, guitarist and song-writer. Production-wise, its much simpler than the previous album giving a laid-back feel to the whole album. The instrumentation just flesh out the song and fill it out.

Would i change a thing?
No way. The album is perfect the way it is.

What are my favourite songs?
Well, all the songs are fantastic and equally my favorite but at gun-point i would say: Take it back, Nina, Thinking out loud(such a wedding song) and Even my dad does sometimes.

Would i recommend it to a friend/Stranger?
Definitely. For those times you just want to lay on the grass on a sunny afternoon with headphones on or in your room on a rainy evening with the radio on, the album will keep you company. For those times you want to do some laundry or cook dinner, Ed will keep you moving and thinking. This album is a combination of danceable tunes and love songs, perfect for whatever season.

So if you havent listened to his not-so-new album, you should.

Happy Listening!!

MTV Video Music Award's 2014 Review : The Good, the Bad and the Just Plain disappointing!

From Miley's twerkscapade last year and Kanye West's "moment-of-truth" during Swift's acceptance speech a few years back, the VMA's is probably one of the most anticipated shows in my books for its memorable moments. I got around to watching last night and i was pleasantly surprised. With Queen B and Iggy leading with eight nominations and Eminem right behind them with seven, the 31st MTV VMA'S visuals was just out of this world and lets not even talk about the spiraling stage. I mean, MTV really out did themselves this time.

For those who haven't watched it yet, SPOILER ALERT!!!I am definitely going to dissect(for lack of a better word really) some of the highlights of the show.

The Most deserved wins

17 minutes of amazing visuals, leg-twisting dance moves, flawless vocals (see what i did there) and heart-wrenching dedications proved that Queen B deserved the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award.

Other deservees (totally sure there's no word like that but still going to use it :p) are best female Video to Katy Perry for her 'Dark Horse' video, best hip-hop video to Drake for his 'Hold On, we're going home' video, best video with a social message to Queen B for Pretty Hurts, best collaboration to B and Jay-Z for Drunk in love and lastly best choreography in a music video to Sia for 'Chandelier'. They all deserved every inch of that moon man.

 The tie

Best male video to Ed Sheeran for Sing, artist to watch out for to Fifth harmony for miss movin' on  and best pop video to Arianne Grande for Problem are not-so-deserving but deserving at the same time. Confusing? Yes, a little. All the music videos in both categories did have a good chance of winning but there can be only one winner. To be honest, the competition was stiff and i was just glad that one of each got to take home a moon man.

The someone-else-deserved-that-moon-man win

Let me just start by saying that Lorde's Royals is no where near the category of rock. You could say a hybrid of rock, but its more pop than rock. Dont get me wrong there, i love Lorde but they were definitely other musicians in that category who deserved it. Another one is best video of the year. Wrecking ball, come on! If anything Happy by Pharrell should have won that category hands down. Im sure millions of music video lovers agree with me.

The best live performance

Queen B, hands down. But a very strong second was Sam Smith with his oh-so-heavenly-heart-breaking performance of Stay with Me.  It was his first american debut on a live show and he moved me to tears.

The most-embarrassed-performer

And this award goes to none other than , Nicki Minaj. I could not help but feel embarrassed for her when she came out to rap during her performance with Jessie J and Arianne clutching her dress for dear life. Gosh, Was it a set-up or a true wardrobe malfunction? Only those who were involved would know.

The best announcers

It goes without saying that Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels should probably be the next hosts for any kind of award show from now onwards. They are funny, funny and funny and that's all you need to keep the audience going, right? Lets start a petition guys (seriously!)

Humanitarian Award

None other than Miley Cyrus deserves this award. Despite her bad girl ways, Miley has proven to have a kind heart with her plight on behalf of the millions of young homeless teenagers not falling on deaf ears, or if may say empty pockets. I salute you Miley for your brave efforts!

Thats it for my views (dissection-LOL!).

From a Fan.

Performance anxiety/Stage fright in Music: How to deal and accept it. (Not only for Musicians)

"A voice is very intimate. It's something of your own. So there's always this fear, because you feel naked. There's a fear of not reaching up to expectations." -Andrea Bocelli

I remember the first time I ever stood in-front of a group of people to perform.  It was way back in high-school and thankfully it was a group ensemble performance because i would have embarrassed myself silly. I was scared and literally had butterflies in my stomach.  I kept on imagining and fearing an instance where my throat would suddenly close up, or become dry or my voice would break and i would croak or i would completely freeze and forget my lyrics. Mayne, i was so nervous and it showed. But luckily enough, none of that stuff happened but i just couldnt help feeling it.

When i began doing solo performances, all those feelings became 10 times worse. My body would shake like the room has suddenly dropped in temperature, my hands would involuntarily do a dance, my mind would go blank, my mouth would suddenly start twitching and so much more. Im telling you my stage fright is the worst kind. Even though i have done a couple of public and private performances, i still go through those same motions.

Performance anxiety stems from the tendency of focusing on yourself rather the presentation, from fighting your anxiety rather than accepting and working with it. Not only in Music, but also in other areas of life. Being a musician is tough. Yes, what you've heard is wrong. The amount of preparation both physically and mentally that it takes to make a person able to stand up in front of hundreds or thousands of people and completely open up and bare their soul can take a life time. To some it comes naturally but to others its just the opposite.

Some musicians take to drugs to curb their anxiety while others take to seeking help to do the same. I'm all for seeking help rather than drugs because it leads to addiction and the rest is history. Great musicians like Amy Winehouse have taken from us too soon because of this deadly weapon. I'm not saying that the only kind of help that you can get is from a doctor. Nope! You can always seek help from yourself. The internet is your friend so why not use it.

So how do you deal with this motions? Well, here are a few tips that have helped me to begin controlling my anxiety:

1. Close your eyes and breathe. Scientifically proven to calm your nerves and keep you relaxed. I always do this before and on stage.

2. Chanel that passion that you feel for your craft into your performance. Close your eyes, through your head back, dance, engage with the crowd and let go of your fears. You could also feed from the energy that audience is exuding.

3. Accept your anxiety and work with it. I have come to understand and accept that i will most probably always have stage fright and that i only need to learn how to make it work for me.

 4. Learn your craft and practice. Practice does make perfect. I am a trumpeter and singer. So putting hours into my practice schedule has allowed me to keep up with both demands and improve on them. Works hand in hand with confidence.

5. Give yourself a pep-talk. Give yourself a slogan that you can be telling yourself so that you get through it. Things like 'No-one else can do this but me', 'Lets do this' really reaffirms your confidence. I always tell myself 'No-one can play the trumpet/sing like you can. Now get up there and do your best.'

6. Do an activity that you love just before a performance. That joy that you feel will reduce effects of pre-performance anxiety. I love to play mobile games so i do that every time before a performance.

There you have it. In whatever you do, dont let anxiety get the best of you!

'The Hand that Rocks the Cradle, Rules the World'; Sex-Appeal-Commercialism Vs 'Speak-The-Truth-About-Your-Hood' (Substance) in Rap music.

So Nicki Minaj's video for 'Anaconda' has just come out, and i watched it and i got angry, then i thought about it, then i got angry some more. There has been a lot of buzz about this music video on twitter and i got curious. Well, curiosity did kill the cat this time. All i saw was ASS-ASS and more ASS and it sickened me. And to make matters worse, the song was just bad. Dont get me wrong, i have mad respect for Nicki that she has been able to do her and still get this far. And i also get that  she was trying to employ the 'Curvy is Beautiful' slogan in her song and all that jazz but there was definitely a better way of glorifying the female body than 'My anaconda dont want none if you aint got buns, hun'. By now you know where I am going with this and if you have concluded that my opinion is biased because 'Im a girl',  or 'I'm Jelous' or 'I'm a hater' then let me stop you right here. Goodbye. But if you can handle the truth, continue reading.

Many female rappers (and musicians) have been known to use their sexuality to make it in the business claiming that it's the only way to gain fame and fans in this testosterone-driven industry. Come on ladies,  Queen Latifah, Missy and many others made big money with their clothes on. Rapping about big behinds, big penis', money in the bank and 'how he wants it' shouldn't be what puts bread and butter on your table.  I mean you cry in your lyrics for respect when you are busy flaunting your barely covered bodies on national television and singing/rapping obscenities that could make your own ears bleed. You get angry when someone calls you a 'bitch' in real life, but use the same word in your songs like your mama gave you that name. Check yourselves and the dictionaries that you can afford to buy. Respect, nudity and profanity dont fall under the same category of words to be used in the same sentence. It might look like im coming down hard (which i am) on female rappers, but the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world you know.

I am all for femininity, gender equality and being able to do what men can do but does that mean that if male rappers start jumping off 12-story buildings, female rappers should do to. Because that's what people mean when they say that if 'male rappers rap about p$*&y, money and weed, then female rappers can.' Frankly that's just mediocre. Okay. Yes, its your body. Fine. We have freedom of choice on whether to continue watching or switch of the television. YAAAY, for freedom of choice, yes? I 'totally agree' with your excuses to make you look like the good guys who are doing what they want in the name of entertainment but something needs to change because what you are doing and what you should be doing are on total opposite ends of the spectrum. We have become victims of this virus called sex appeal commercialism that's spreading faster than Ebola ever could. Basically a marketing ploy by big entertainment companies to exploit us, keep us hostage and manipulate us to thinking that we like it. All in the name of entertainment.

Old school rap music was all about what was going on in the community. It was about struggle and enlightenment, freedom and truth, pride and vision. It could resonate with anyone in the same situation, miles away. The music spoke from the heart and didn't have the over-exaggerations that we have today. It had substance. It had power. Rap music now has the wrong kind of power on our over-sexualised societies. If we leave all that power to ASS then surely the next generations will be adversely affected. Rap has taken the route that commercial songs have taken and frankly i am a lot disappointed. I do understand that evolution in music has to happen especially due to the introduction of new technologies, but this kind of evolution has taken a step too far. In the wrong direction.

One thing i have learnt from my years in music education (and generally, common sense) that humans can be conditioned to change. Take for example peer pressure in all age groups. If you are constantly around people who are doing something different from what you are used to doing, sooner or later you will begin doing those things. Constant exposure to a particular behavior becomes more appealing as days go by. Its basic human nature. So why not use that to your advantage Femcee's and make songs that everyone can appreciate and doesn't leave us squirmish in our chairs or embarassed when we are with our children/parents.

To all Femcee's upcoming or otherwise in it already: cliché or not, the change begins with you.

From a very worried Musician and Music lover.

Is Sauti Sol's "NISHIKE" Too Sexy for Telly?

"Dont gain the world and lose your soul, wisdom is better than silver or gold"
-Bob Marley

Lemme begin by saying that i am a die-hard fan of Sauti Sols so its only right if i did my first post about them.

I remember the first time i watched the 'Nishike' video. The urge to go drink a couple of glasses of cold water or even take a few cold showers was too real. Rewinding and replaying the video was what i did those first couple of minutes not quite believing what i was seeing. From Biens bodyrolls to Mudigi's pull-up antics not forgetting Polycarp's on the floor endeavours and Chimano's on the car 'threesome' (for luck of a better word), this video was nothing but HOT! They dared to be different and it paid off with more than 700,000 views since they released it.

Frankly speaking, i am glad that they decided to do something out of the box and out of the norm. The band of 4 have released hit after hit, winning the hearts of many Kenyans and it was about time they stepped up to the plate and showed us why we love them so much.  For the first time, i felt like the Kenyan Music industry was going somewhere. Somewhere where recognition on a global platform and rubbing shoulders with the giants of global entertainment is bound to happen.

Old news, new news, the video left us feeling some type of way but the music was nothing short of revolutionary.  So much controversy revolved around the video that most people failed to realize the song that was underneath it. A love song for the lovers 'Nishike' fused Sauti Sol's charm with Kagwe Mungai's prowess and the collaboration was amazing. From most people that i have talked to about the song and the views on YouTube, its clear that people think that the song is too western and lacks that Kenyan signature. They might have their reasons for thinking that but i actually believe the opposite.

We are so fixated on our beliefs and opinions that we refuse to be open-minded when it comes to our music and artists. Its no wonder that most artists are afraid of making music that incooperates various styles of music from around the global for fear of back-lash and being accused of 'trying to copy the West'.  They then risk having songs that sound the same and end up compromising their artistry.  It becomes ridiculous after a while and kills moral for any upcoming artist who wants to take that daring step and break the boundaries that we have set for ourselves and pursue their global vision. I believe that its possible to 'sound kenyan' and still 'sound global' at the same time.

Back to the matter at hand, Is it too sexy for telly? i dont think so. It might be uncomfortable to watch with children around or even make you feel squirmish, but what isn't this days. Take for example all those Jamaican and American music videos that have half- naked girls and shirtless men gyrating to lewd lyrics and making suggestive gestures and still get airtime on our television stations. And what about those the Durex adverts with funny sounds and insinuating words during commercials. Why cant we extend the same open-mindedness and courtesy to our local artists?

To Sauti Sol, Keep on keeping on. To me, you are the epitome of what a Kenyan artist should be. Fearless and lovable with a bit of charm and daring attitude to be different from the rest. I salute you and your efforts.

Just a fans' opinion.

HELLO THERE. PLEASED TO MEET YOU :)

Blessed Sunday Everybody!

Welcome to what will soon be your go-to blog for a good read and an entertaining day!
Let me introduce myself, I am Esther, a musician at heart and an enthusiast by choice. It doesn't take much to make me happy and it doesn't take much to make me sad. An introvert by nature, I seclude myself and live in my thoughts. Hey! I am not crazy... I do know the difference between fantasy and reality, but cant a girl just dream a little? I love my own company and this may come out as rude or like I dont care but I cant help it. I have always been like this and probably will always be. Im not a risk-taker, i think before i act, sometimes before i speak and rarely go out of my comfort zone. Noone's perfect. I love to plan, know how a good book ends, how my friends are doing and what the time is. It's who I have come to be and embracing this has helped me overcome hurdles and avoid some mistakes. Trying to avoid being a victim of nature, you know.

Well, there I go rambling on and on about myself even before I begin, but I feel it's important for you to know who I am. I mean, you've taken a good 2 minutes (5 minutes tops, I think) to click on my link, wait for it to load and read this post for the first time. You deserve to know who you are making time for and why.

Blogging has never really been my thing but lately I find myself wanting to clarify a few things (actually a lot!) about Music and other things. And since it's totally inconsiderate to try and hammer so much into one conversation when talking to people (when I actually do), the only other option is to write it down. Speak through words because its much easier that way and I get to avoid awkward glances because I can't seem to shut-up.

As you guessed by the title, this blog is about Music -  'All Things Music.' Lets face it, Music is everywhere thanks to all the technology we all have today. So why not talk about it? I wont bore you with technical terms and in-depth analysis' or even try to explain the difference between one instrument and the other: I will try to keep it fun and upbeat because that's what Music is meant to be. I will also share my experiences as I continue on this journey of self-discovery into the untamed waters of the Music realm because sharing is caring. . :) I will give my opinion and back them up with facts without being too cynical and overbearing.  And hopefully you will too share your views and your opinions. 'I am a student of the universe, and learning is a never-ending curve.'

So lets get started... - Unwind, Indulge and Escape with me!

Happy Reading!
